“Live Day”

National Public Radio published a story this past week highlighting Staff Sgt. Liam Dwyer, a 32-year old veteran of the Afghanistan War.  The piece breaks down Sgt. Dwyer’s surge into the arena of professional motorsports, which he began in earnest following his return from his tour of duty.  What makes this story especially unique is that Sgt. Dwyer is missing his left leg because of the detonation of a Taliban IED during combat.  In racecar driving, the job of the left leg is to control the clutch, which Sgt. Dwyer does with the help of a prosthetic limb.

What particularly struck me about this article was the introduction, which discusses the concept of “Live Day”. Injured veterans use this term to denote the date which the catastrophic event took place. “Some of us, many of us die,” Sgt. Dwyer noted. “For those of us that don’t, Live Day is our new birthday.”

In recognition of Memorial Day, Sgt. Dwyer’s story of perseverance and heroism puts a different spin on that word, memorial.  Sgt. Dwyer is up-front in mentioning that not everyone in this situation is as fortunate as he. For him, and for so many of our veterans across this nation, to memorialize each day means to live life for those that were lost protecting the freedoms we so often take for granted.

With great reverence and respect, we honor those who have given their lives for the freedom of this nation.  Your memory is surely never forgotten.
