Yes, You Can Dance!
Over the past few weeks, first year Pitt DPT students Julie DeMarke, Kelsie Harding, Natalie Latshaw, Megan Zartman, and I have spent our Sundays volunteering as dance mentors for the local organization Yes, You Can Dance, which offers dance classes to senior citizens, individuals with special needs, teens, and veterans. We have been having a fabulous time working with the Level 1 Special Needs Ballroom Class at Steel City Ballroom in Mount Lebanon! We were fortunate to help Yes, You Can Dance recently celebrate its second year anniversary, as well as inclusion in “PhD in Special Education’s List of 101 Top Special Needs Groups, Activities, and Camps.”
Julie DeMarke explains what she enjoys about her experience:
“I love the positive energy from the class and staff, and of course, getting to boogie on a Sunday afternoon.”
Kelsie Harding adds:
“You go with the intentions of being one of the mentors and never expect to get as much out of it as the dancers, but when you leave you realize they have made just as big of an impact on you as you have on them.”
There are so many benefits to being a dance mentor, not least of which is that you can sometimes catch glimpses of Dr. Josbeno, Dr. Delitto, and Professor Delitto getting their groove on, mentoring as well. Interested in joining us? Check out the Yes, You Can Dance! Facebook page for more information. Until then, boogie on!
