The Opportunity of Adversity

We are nearing the end of our first year of school. I would list the topics that we have covered thus far, but it would take too long, and frankly, you wouldn’t read it. I will point out that being in a physical therapy program, a fairly salient topic has been that of ‘disability’.

In the TED Talk by Aimee Mullins, she addresses the definition of ‘disability’. Being a bilateral amputee herself, she literally has a lifetime of experience being categorized by that word. If you have ever listened to Aimee’s TED Talks, however, you would understand her frustration by the definition. Further, you would likely take note of her relationship with ‘adversity.’

During her discussion, she states, “adversity is not an obstacle we need to get around in order to resume life.” In fact, the question is not whether or not you will meet adversity, but how you will meet it. I will continue that thought by asking, “how will you let the experience shape your character?”

Adaptation is one of our greatest human skills, as noted in this talk. It is so great, that we do not know our own power and ability of adaptation unless challenged. As physical therapy students, we are asked to challenge ourselves regularly, but we also are beginning to learn the skill of asking our patients to do the same.

Being in this program, we are equipping ourselves with the tools to recognize and embrace adversity. We are discovering the role we play as an integral part of our patient’s health and well-being (Aimee mentions memories of PT in her talk!). To that end, we have to make sure that we do not lay the first brick in a wall that will actually disable someone. It is our responsibility as professionals to recognize adversity, allow growing pains to occur, and accept that challenges are what will make us the physical therapist that someone will point out as “the one that redefined ability.”

You have likely never heard of the “I have a plan” speech… but, I am sure you would quickly recognize the “I have a dream” speech.

As students, we can sometimes get lost in “the plan”. I have to get this, this, and that done before tomorrow, so I can do this, that, and the other thing.

Simon Sinek in a not-so-recent TED talk sheds some light on successful leaders and organizations. He describes the secret to success by saying, “every organization knows what they do. Some know how they do it. But very few know why they do what they do. Not for a profit – that is a result… But what is your purpose, why do you exist?”

He encourages defining your purpose and recognizing that once you develop your “why”, you will inspire those around you.

So, what motivates and influences us? What is our tipping point for action?

Be inspiring. Be a leader.

 Welcome Back!

Students are returning from a quick spring break, recharged and ready to take on the next month of classes. To welcome the first years back are a smattering of exams, including musculoskeletal and neuroscience. The irony of my brain (trying to) learn about my brain has occurred to me several times before, but the perspective below is truly astounding. Perseverate, first year class, and find some inspiration in this fantastic TED talk to get you through the coming weeks!

The Monday Memo: 11/12/12

The Monday Memo

November 12, 2012                                                                                       PITT DPT STUDENTS

As first year physical therapy students, we have been presented with the challenge of learning a multitude of patient presentations, pathologies, and treatments. Meeting that challenge head-on, we have readily fallen victim to several of our own diagnoses: chronic fatigue syndrome, attention deficit disorders of varying severity, and dehydration due to caffeine intake, to name a few. That being said, we are collectively failing to recognize the milestone that we are rapidly approaching – the end of our first fall semester.

Viewed as the top 1%, we have been celebrated as the best of the best. We push ourselves to our limits because we intend to become the leaders in our professional community. Replaying on a circuit in our brains is some variation of the phrase, “if we study what is merely average, we will remain merely average” (check out the video below to hear Shawn Achor’s opinion on that!). Average is not our forte, and by choosing a Pittsburgh education we have set our standards high.

I am inspired by the dedication of my classmates, and continue to strive for excellence because I am encouraged and supported through my DPT family. They have changed the lens through which I view a challenge. We are a team, accomplishing more than we give ourselves credit for. Continue to stay motivated and optimistic! Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and you’ve consumed enough coffee to remain a Starbucks rewards member for years to come.
