7 Billion Strong

The world’s population is predicted to breach a new milestone sometime this week: 7 billion! Just saying that number is simultaneously exciting and terrifying (quite appropriate for the week before Halloween). No, we do not expect more people on the bus or cars on the road anytime soon, but the huge number does reinvigorate the question of how we collectively control population growth. Control not in the sense of limiting the number of people through birth restriction, but in terms of management. The real problem is how an increasing world’s population strains resources- both natural and human. There is no doubt that successful management will in part require an effective healthcare system, one modeled on evidence and efficiency. As physical therapy students, we should be diligently working towards improving our diagnostic and intervention skill sets so we can provide better care to more people. We are less than three years away from being key contributors to our field and those waiting room lines will not be getting any shorter!
